Announcing the new Young Publishers Mentor Scheme!

SYP-publishers-mentor

We’re excited to announce and open up applications to our new Young Publishers Mentor Scheme! You may be familiar with SYP mentoring schemes in which SYP members are offered the chance to be mentored by a publishing professional within their desired area of work. We believe that young publishers may be in need of more focused mentoring in a group setting so we’re offering the opportunity.

NOTE: This is a separate scheme from the general Mentor Scheme. This scheme will still take place later in the year.

The 2016 mentor for successful applicants will be Publishing Scotland’s Book Marketing Manager Gill Tasker.

Screen Shot 2016-08-08 at 00.57.10Dr Gill Tasker is former Joint Managing Director of the award-winning Glasgow-based independent publisher Cargo. She completed a PhD in English Studies from the University of Strathclyde in 2015 and her thesis was shortlisted for the Universities Committee of Scottish Literature Ross Roy Medal that year. Upon graduating she lectured on the Masters in Publishing Studies at the University of Stirling’s International Centre for Publishing and Communication, and she is currently Book Marketing Manager at Publishing Scotland, the trade, network, and development body. In this role Gill leads Publishing Scotland’s varied marketing activity and she is also the Online Editor of Books from Scotland.

How does it work?
The chosen mentees will be mentored together in a small group by one mentor, the fantastic Gill Tasker. You will meet altogether in Edinburgh on the second Monday of every month from October 2016 to March 2017. Venue of meeting will change each month and is still TBC. Topics discussed are flexible and open to discussion among the successful applicants. A member of the SYP Scotland committee will be present at every meeting to assist.

Am I eligible?
You must be in your first two years of employment within the publishing or book industry in Scotland to be able to apply. You must be an SYP member to apply.

How do I apply?
Send your CV, your SYP membership number (if you don’t have it let us know) and a short cover letter saying why you’d like to take part and how you think you’d benefit to scotland@thesyp.org.uk by 31st August, 12pm.
